The largest city of Vermont, Burlington, has recently shifted its electricity sources from fossil fuels to 100% renewable sources. This movement is part of a statewide goal to reduce the amount of energy achieved from fossil fuels to less than 10%. The city of 42,000 is the largest city as of now to sustain itself on 100% renewable energy and also sell some of the energy to other areas. This achievement is a great step in the direction for green energy and shows that large cities can be sustained on renewable sources.
Similar to my last scrAPES reflection, my first question was “Why is this being attempted in San Diego?” As of this article, little (if any) of our energy comes from renewable resources. However, the military bases in San Diego are doing a great job of trying to convert to renewable resources by installing solar panels on many of the buildings. This should be happening all over San Diego but the solar panels are expensive and the money doesn’t want to be spent even though it will benefit both environmentally and economically in the long run.
