Obama to declare National Monument in San Gabriels

Over half of the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles will be designated as a national monument by executive order. This will be the 13th time President Obama has used his powers to expand or establish a national monument. The action will take place in order to allocate more funds to the Forest Service to protect against pollution, graffiti, and wildfires. However, there are those concerned with the effects on private property and the ability of local agencies to battle wildfires. Officials assert that the designation “will not infringe on existing rights”, while others remain skeptical.
I think this is a great move, as long as it doesn’t go overboard. By that, I mean they don’t exclude people from seeing the beauty of the mountains. Also, I hope they don’t introduce a lot of fees to those who live around as the people who live in the surrounding mountains also fear. On the other hand, I appreciate the initiative to preserve the mountain ranges of LA and attempt to protect the forests from damages caused by humans. I hope this is a great movement to step up the protection of the wild that still remains.

Renewable energy plan hinges on huge Utah caverns
By Mead Gruver and Matthew Brown, Associated Press

A new renewable technology is being developed that would require four very deep caverns in Utah. They would be carved out of salt deposits and used to store compressed air because the wind doesn't blow all the time. The air would then be released to drive turbines that create electricity. Planning to export twice as much energy as the Hoover Dam, this proposal would help satisfy California’s requirement of ⅓ clean energy while also providing salt for other uses. Experts say that energy storage like this is much more efficient that battery storage as energy storage doesn’t lose energy like batteries do. Excavation is set to begin in 2016 and last two years.
This sounds absolutely amazing to me! I think it is a very good idea to use an excavation site for more than one purpose. I mean, the salt is going to be taken out eventually, so why not put the big gaping hole left over to good use? I hope that it works as it is planned to because it would provide a great amount of clean energy. I remember the one video we watched said clean energy would take up a lot of space which this would as well. However, I think this would be worth it especially because it generates twice as much energy as the Hoover Dam.
